Longwood (Huddersfield) low-energy house

Longwood - Picture 1

The Longwood House was built in 1992 by Green Building Company partners Bill Butcher and Steve Slator (then trading as Slator Butcher Construction). With four-bedrooms and 107 m2 floor area, the house was built to minimise the environmental impact arising from energy use and choice of materials. The 1996 publication 'Energy Efficiency in Housing' described the Longwood house as "one of the most energy efficient houses to have been built in the UK to date".

Energy efficiency levels were achieved by building in high insulation levels (including a 150 mm fully-filled wall cavity), detailing for air-tightness and by using the most energy-efficient central heating system available. Other environmental considerations were taken into account during construction: the use of fibreboard and chipboard was minimised in the house, to reduce the number of sources of formaldehyde gas; timber windows were chosen instead of aluminium or PVC; internal timber was treated with solvent-free paints and water based stains; the roof was insulated with blown Warmcel recycled newpaper.

The Longwood House achived impressive standard of airtightness (with a 50 Pa air leakage rate of around 3 ac/h), making it 'one of the most airtight to have been constructed in the UK' (Energy Efficiency in Housing, 1996). Its annual carbon dioxide emissions were estimated at being just over 25 kg (carbon dioxide/m2/a, thus out-performing the Building Research Establishment's  Environmental Standard Award mandatory target.
